CHRIST’S COLLEGE WINS

14-3 Score Against St. Andrew’s

Dominating set play in the forwards, Christ’s College beat St. Andrew’s College by 14 points (a goal irom a try and three penalty goals) to 3 (a penalty goal) in a fast open game at Christ’s College on Saturday.

Only one try was scored, and this was when the St. Andrew's fullback, S. E. Harrison, was too slow moving to a bouncing ball behind his own goal-lme and was beaten to it by the College forward, B. W Middleton.

The match was not as one-sided as the score might indicate, and the sound defence of both sides prevented more tries from being scored.

Outweighing the St. Andrew’s pack by 201 b a man. the Christ’s College forwards got the ball back to their backs with almost monotonous regularity from scrums and line-outs, and the team had the better of the first spell. Mishandling by the College backs, especially in this spell, spoilt several promising movements. and the determined defence of the St. Andrew’s backs, aided bv the loose forward role of R. J. D. Hilson, also curbed them. Tactical Kicking College abandoned passing rushes in favour of tactical kicking by its backs for mucn of the second spell, and several high kicks by Andrews and Kissling had the defence worried. After being down, 3-9, St. Andrew's staged an all-out effort. The forwards were tigerish in the loose, and held their own for a brief spell in the line r outs and scrums. The backs, chiefly W. R. McDonald and B. C. Adams, broke through the defence several times, and came close to scoring. Christ s College was able to turn the attack, and when Middleton scored his try near the end of the match, the victory was assured. Middleton was injured when ne scored, and had to leave the field, but until then had been one of the best of the - Christ’s College pack in the loose. He was well supported by Grigg, who made several bulldozing runs. Although they were less prominent, Reekie and Cox worked hard in the line-outs and the tight for Christ’s College. Andrew's. after he had settled down. I. C. H. Dick, and Kissling, were the best of the Christ's College backs, with Kissling looking the most formidable on attack. Dick was content to be a link at second fiveeighths for most of the game, but when he did see an opening once in the second spell he made a fine run down the middle of the field. Adams, at half-back. Thompson. Wakelin, and McDonald all played well in the St. Andrew’s backs Adams gave a good service from the scrum, varied his play, and combined well with Thompson. Thompson and Wakelin both used their opportunities, passed well, were sale on defence and showed pace. They tended to attempt too much alone at times. McDonald had few opportunities. but ran well when' he received the ball, and was safe on defence. Hilson played an intelligent game as a loose forward, upsetting several Christ’s College attacks and supporting his backs well He was well supported by Willis. N. W. Price, until he left the field with an injury, and N. C. Morrison w«»rked hard in the tight. For Christ’s College. Middleton scored a try. which was converted by Reekie, who also kicked two penalty goals. Andrews also kicked a penalty goal. Thompson kicked a penalty goal for St. Andrew’s. The referee was Mr J. P. Malcolm.
