A new first-aid textbook published this year indicates several changes in standard first-aid techniques. A tourniquet, for instance, should not be released once it has been put into place, whereas it was formerly advised to release it every 15 minutes. Before applying a bandage, minor wounds should be cleansed with soap and water Danger from lockjaw (tetanus) is now associated with all wounds instead of only puncture wounds as it was formerly believed. Areas of the body suffering from frostbite should be warmed rapidly rather than slowly Injured persons should be moved by pulling them along the long axis of the body —not by rolling or pulling them laterally.
