Timaru A Wins From Avon A

The Timaru A team won th 6 Canterbury Amateur Cycling Centre s Hope Gibbons Shield race for teams racing 25 miles. The event, which is virtually a teams’ time trial, was hel** on the Avon club’s course from Yaldhurst to Aylesbury and return In unfavourable conditions the Timaru time of 59m in 53.45ec recorded by the winning team was g °Timaru B also rode well for fourth. The riding of the Timaru A team left little to be desired and the lap changing was extremely smooth. Avon A, which was second, was n’ot as good in their lap changing, but rode a hard race. A smash in the last half mile probably marred the team’s chance of winning al though at this stage it was down on time by a few seconds to Timaru A. J. Beere touched R. Fowler’s back wheel and fell with D. Lyes going over the top of him. Beere was able to continue and make the fourth man of the team. Lyes was taken to hospital, but was back at the finish for the presentation of the shield. Christchurch had a hard ride as it lost one of its team, L. Fibbens, farily early in the- race and the remaining four had to keep together for the rest of the journey These riders did well to be third, Im in I.6sec behind the winner. Timaru A will go to Levin later in the season to take part in the National Hope. Gibbons event. Results were:— _ Timaru A (B. Hill, L. Palmer, R Harrison, N. Fisher, G. Newman, K' Jeffrey), 60mln 55sec. 3. 25-MILE SCRATCH RACE For riders not competing in the teams race a 25-mile scratch race was run over the same course. This was won by the Avon rider, B Haisman, with B. A’Court (Christchurch) second. Abbreviations used in the re suits are: Avon (A.), Christchurch (C.). Results:— B. Haisman (A.) 1, B. A’Court (C i 1 2. T. Weir (C.) 3. Time, 67min 54sec. Sealed Handicap.—B. Berry (C ) (IJmin). 66min 29sec, 1; D. Haisman (A.) (jmin), 67min 24.25ec, 2; B. Dawe (C.) (IJmin), 67min 24.8 sec. 3. MAIREHAU NOVICE CLUB E. Lawrence, making his first appearance in the senior section of the Mairehau Novice Club, won from A. Bush. The race was a combined senior and junior event with the juniors riding over nine miles and the seniors over 13J miles. J. Swanston took senior fastest time. Results:— Junior.—M. Jones 1, R. Carr 2. Fastest time. M. Jones, 24min 52sec. Senior.—E. Lawrence 1, A. Bush 2, H. Moore 3. Fastest time, J. Swanston, 33min 41sec.

HORNBY CLUB’S TITLES

K. Brown rode brilliantly to take both the senior and junior 25-mi’e titles of the Hornby Cycling Club on Saturday. His time of 59min 30sec was a good effort considering that over the second half of the race the riders were facing a very strong wind. The race was run from Islington down the Main South road and return. Brown just shaded the senior rider, R. Lucas, for the senior title and only inches behind Lucas was D. Swanston. The highlight of the race was the great ride put up by the first rider home. M. Wildermoth. Wildermoth was having his first ride in open company. Results were:— M. Wildermoth (16min), 68min 12sec, 1; J. Spencer (4Jmin), 62min 32sec, 2; F. Lucas (7Jmin), 67min 32.25ec, 3; A. Howison (4Jmin), 62min Senior Championship.—K. Brown (scr), 59min 30sec. Junior Championship.—K. Brown (scr), 59min 30sec.
