Australians Form Bulk

Australians represented more than half the overseas tourists who visited New Zealand in April this year, according to the figures published in the latest newsletter of the Government Tourist and Publicity Department.

They spent £137.491 during the month, which is an increase of £10,294 from the same month last year. Of the 2687 visitors 1535 were from Australia. The total number of tourists showed an increase of 30 per cent, from the April, 1957. United States tourists were the second largest number. There were 459 and they spent £41,147 during the month. In April, 1957, they spent £17,024. Thirty-six tourists from Canada spent £1842. Visitors from British Pacific islands provided the third largest group with 235 persons. Britain was a close fourth with 205 tourists. They spent £103.956. A drop in the amount of money spent by tourists from non-Ster-ling countries, other than the United States, is shown in the figures. Only £Bl6 was sp°nt during the month, compared with £249? in April. 1957—a drop of £1606. The amount for the month. £291.718, was an increase of £61,028 from the same period last year.
