N.Z. PLAYERS IN ENGLAND

Recruitment For Tests Suggested A suggestion made by W. E. Merritt, the former New Zealand test player, that the New Zealand team for the remaining tests could be strengthened by the inclusion of former Canterbury players in England—P. Arnold now of Northamptonshire, and R. E. Hitchcock, who plays for Warwickshire—is unlikely to receive much support in New Zealand. Merritt, who is one of the 8.8.C.’s commentators during the test series, said during a broadcast of the final day’s play that New Zealand cricketers resident in London had put up the proposal. Yesterday the chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Council’s Board of Control (Mr J. L. Kerr) said no official request from the manager (Mr J. H. Phillips) for additional players had been received, but he was certain the board would not agree to any such proposal. There was no suggestion, he said, that there would be any substitutions for the selectors’ choice.
