MR GOMULKA’S LEADERSHIP

(Rec. 11 p.m.) WARSAW, June 22

Rumours that Polish Communist leader, Mr Wladyslaw Gomulka, will be ousted from power have been ridiculed by informed political sources in Warsaw. Rumours which circulated widely in Warsaw on Saturday indicated that Mr Gomulka would probably be succeeded by Mr Franciszek Mazur, Poland’s Ambassador in Prague. Sources described the rumours as “very stupid and unworthy of consideration.” “On the contrary, Mr Gomulka's party leadership and his party are united more closely than ever now.” they said. This is taken to be a reference to the deliberate Polish silence over the execution of Mr Nagy in sharp contrast to severe condemnations by almost all other Communist bloc countries. The Polish standpoint is thus considered strikingly independent, and even delicate.
