Temporary Affiliation Approved
The temporary affiliation of Lyttelton and Hornby branches of the Free Kindergarten Association with the Christchurch branch has been approved. The affiliation will remain until a district association is formed, it was decided at a recent meeting of the delegates’ council at which Mrs A. F. Johnson presided. This week Miss Elizabeth Bailey, of the nursery schools of Britain, at present specialist tutor in child development with the Adult Education Department of the University of Canterbury visited kindergartens in Christchurch and was entertaifted by the council to morning tea at the Kindergarten Teachers’ College “Later this month,” said Mrs Johnson, “Miss Bailey hopes to spend a whole day observing the programmes of both morning and afternoon sessions in kindergartens, and will also address a meeting of staff, students and parents.” The principal of the college. Miss R. Wilkie, has been granted leave of absence to attend the Kindergarten Principals’ Conference to be held in Auckland in October.
Plans for Daffodil Day, the association's annual street appeal in September, were well in hand, and the following members were elected to convene the various sub-committees set up:—convener. Mrs C. O. Mathias; deputy convener, Mrs S. Cropp; secretary. Mrs A. J. Dearsley; flowers, Mrs S. Cropp; cakes, Mrs A. P. Steven; transport, Mrs L. Collingwood; advertising and publicity Mrs J. R. Pirie; catering, Mrs A. H. King; sewing, Mrs K. Tilley, street collections, Mr W. R. Bell.
Health and attendances at kindergartens had been good and doctors 'from the Health Department had been carrying out routine medical inspections of the children during the month. Mrs Johnson said. The following staff appointments have been confirmed:— Miss H. McGregor, director of Me • Farlane Park Kindergarten;- Mrs C. Barrett, director of Shirley Kindergarten; Miss A. Atkinson, director of Nuffield Kindergarten; Miss K. Caldwell, acting director of Hillmorten Kindergarten.
To show appreciation of their long services in a voluntary capacity to kindergartens, the following have been made honorary associates of their kindergartens: Beckenham, Mesdames E. E. Piper, A. H. Williams, E. Sollitt, W. Grieve, G. A. Veale. Lady May, Mesdames J. R. Bowman, A. W. Hosken, K. S. Legge, W. J. McDowell, M. J. Staunton. McKenzie Kindergarten, Mesdames R. W. Jones, S. D. Stanley.
