CURRENT NOTES

An afternoon tea party was held at the home of Mrs M. Rudkin, Wai-iti terrace, recently in honour of Mrs A. Haugh, who has resigned from the Fendalton. Free Kindergarten Committee after 13 years. A presentation and flowers were given to Mrs Haugh on behalf of the committee.

The following gifts were received during May for the patients of Cashmere Sanatorium: sweets and fruit from the British Sailors’ Society; .tobacco, sweets and fruit from the New Zealand Patriotic Fund Board; magazines and fruit from the Tuberculosis Association; books and magazines from anonymous donors; the Catholic Women’s League; J. Fulton; 4.096; the Dawson Printing Company and Mr F. Derrett. Mrs Enid Frye presided when the music circle of the Overseas League recently presented the following programme:—Mesdames C. Cogswell and M. Collins (vocal solos), Mr I. Weir (pianoforte and vocal solos), Mrs E. Frye (recitation). Instrumental quartets were performed by Helga and Keith Newson, Mrs M. Johnson and Mr C. Martin. Mrs M. Mason and Miss N. Billcliff'ascompanied the performers. **

The 72nd birthday party of the Christchbrch Central Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held at the Cambridge Terrace Methodist Sunday School. Mrs I. Wilson presided and welcomed

visitors from the North Canterbury district executive which included Riccarton, Spreydon, St. Albans,'New Brighton, Bryndwr, and Linwood representatives, and Mr Green, the Mayor of Dargaville, who brought greetings from the Northland P.W.M.U. and the Auckland district W.C.T.U. Mr Green led devotions. Musical items were given by Miss Kathleen Mangels, Mesdames Woodcock, Wilson and Brownscombe. Mrs Dorothy E. Robertson received a cable yesterday saying that her portrait, “Katrina,” has Jjeen hung in the Paris Salon. Mrs Robertson has had one or two pictures hung at the salon each year since 1951. The portrait is of a Christchurch girl, Katring Reed, of Clyde road.

, Miss M E. Thornton has resigned from the staff of the Christchurch West High School after sixteen years’ service. Her resignation was accepted with regret by the bord of managers last evening.
