No Time For Nerves

The days before a big representative game must be nervous ones for a young player, but Clive Whitehead, Western’s young centre-for-ward, had no time to get “butterflies” before his game for Canterbury against Wellington last Monday. In Saturday’s match against South Canterbury, Ted Charlton injure,d an ankle when he kicked hard at a blocked ball and the selector, Mr Roger Smith, had to find a replacement. He tried to get in touch with Peter Devine without success, and H was not until after lunch on Monday that he decided to play Whitehead. It was after 2 p.m. before Whitehead heard of his selection ana then there was a fast drive to, pick up his gear and he arrived at English Park with only a few minutes to spare. He justified his selection by scoring one goal and making another.
