FRANZ JOSEF HOTEL
Licence Might Lapse V fSew Zealand Press Association; GREYMOUTH, June 6. If plans for the proposed new Franz Josef Glacier Hotel are not filed with the Westland licensing Committee by its next quarterly meeting in September, there is a distinct possibility that the accommodation licence for the hotel might not be renewed. This was indicated by the chairman (Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.), . at yesterday's annual meeting of the committee in Greymouth. On behalf of members, the chairman expressed some concern at the lack of progress towards rebuilding since the hotel was destroyed in 1954. The chairman made the comments during consideration of an application for the issue of an accommodation licence to Peter Garland Graham in respect of the Franz Josef Glacier- Hotel. Waiho.
The application would be granted subject to the expressed condition about the filing of plans, he said. The chairman said the committee felt bound to take note that the premises were destroyed by fire some years ago and had not yet been rebuilt. He said that, after the fire, the committee first issued a permit for temporary premises and later, in 1956, a temporary licence was granted for these premises. However, up to the present time, the premises had not been rebuilt, nor were there any plans before the committee for its approval or consideration, he said.
The chairman said the committee was aware of the problems of finance which were faced by the authorities regarding rebuilding, but it felt the time had arrived when plans should be filed for its consideration.
