VANISHED ClTlES.—Scattered over the globe are the sites of hundreds of cities which were founded, which flourished, and which met their end. In **Vanished Cities” (published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson), two German scholars, Hermann and Georg Schreiber, recreate some of these cities and the life that once pulsed through them. In general, the authors have avoided sites which have been written about copiously, and have turned to lesser-known places, and to some that have been wholly neglected. The result is a fascinating collection in which the ordinary reader learns about such places as Karakorum, where Genghis Khan reigned in savage splendour; Sybaris, where a way of life passed a word into the language; and the ancient kingdom of Ghana, from which a new State has taken its name. There are accounts of .the destruction of Sodom and of Pompeii. A collection of beautiful photographs, excellently reproduced, round out a book which gives new life to human habitations of years long gone by. The picture above is of the Greek temple in Marmara, a suburb of Delphi—the seat of the famous oracle.
