(Rec. 8 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, April 3. California’s worst rain and wind storm in half a century swept through the southern half of the State today, leaving thousands homeless in flood-ravaged lowFive persons were reported dead in the storm. Northern California Caught the first glimpse of blue sky in nearly 48 hours, but the squall-buffeted southern part of the State suffered new landslides, fallen trees and power failures. Nearly 36 hours of continuous downpour in a 100-mile strip of the coastal area from north of San Francisco and south to Monterey and Salinas forced more than 5000 persons to flee their flooded homes. Normally placid streams turned into raging torrents.
