SIR VIVIAN FUCHS

Arrival In City Sir Vivian Fuchs, leader of the British Trans-Antarctic Expedition, is likely to be invested as a knight commander of the order of the British Empire (K.8.E.). “I have heard nothing officially,” he said in Christchurch last evening, “but I understand that a K.B.E. has been mentioned, so I suppose that’s it.”

Sir Vivian Fuchs had just reached Christchurch after a holiday with his wife in Otago and Southland. It had been quiet, he said, and pleasant. He hadn't caught any fish, but "I saw a big one at Lake Manapouri.” The Antarctic veteran is likely to return to the south. He is still scientific director to the Falkland Islands Dependency Service and, although based in London, expects to fly out to the Falklands and Graham Land on a “refresher course" after this expedition's affairs have been wound up. Today in Christchurch Sir Vivian Fuchs will be given a civic welcome, will visit three schools, and this afternoon will be taken on a scenic tour. He and his wife leave New Zealand on April 12 in the Rangitoto, for Britain.
