Poisonous Gas In Ship’s Hold
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY. April 2. The 3952-ton cargo vessel Binburra made a full-speed dash into Sydney harbour yesterday with clouds of smoke and poisonous gas pouring from her hold. Firemen in gasmasks lifted the hatch covers, allowed the gases to disperse, and soon controlled a fire in the hold.
They said later that moisture had seeped through the bass containing copper concentrate and had caused a chemical reaction which released the gas and caused the fire.
The Binburra. which is owned by the Commonwealth Department of Shipping and Transport was on passage from South Australia to Japan with 5800 tons of copper concentrate.
