DAUGHTER OF TSAR
Evidence Given German Court
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) WISEBADEN, April 1. A former captain of the Russian Imperial Dragoons told a German Court today he has no doubt Mrs Anna Anderson is Anastasia, the youngest daughter of the last Russian Tsar, the American Associated Press reported. Captain Felix Dassel, aged 68, told how, from being a bitter opponent, he became one of the staunchest supporters of Mrs Anderson, who claims that she survived a Bolshevik firing squad which was ordered to shoot the Tsar’s family in 1918,
The Court moved into the home of the ailing witness for the continued hearing of the claim which has been the subject of international dispute for more than three decades. The trial involves a civil suit which Mrs Anderson has brought against Duchess Barbara of Mecklenburg. who was ruled to be the Tsar’s heiress by a Berlin Probate Court in 1933. The duchess, a grand niece of the Tsar, claims that Mrs Anderson is actually a Polish farm worker named Franziska Schanzkowski. Mrs Anderson, who is 57 and bed-ridden with tuberculosis, does not attend the hearings.
