BOWLS Champion Of Champion Women’s Fours Rounds

Three rounds of the champion of champions fours tournament of the Christchurch Women’s Bowling centre were played on the Opawa green yesterday. The semi-finals and final will be played next Thursday on the Woolston green. For the first two rounds there was no wind and the fast-green caused quite a few players to feel for their length and green. During the third round there was a slight breeze but it was hardly strong enough to affect the running of the bowls. In the first round United was unlucky to lose its game on the extra head after fighting hard over the last six heads against Beckenham. On the fifteenth head, Beckenham was leading, 20-10. Over the next three heads United improved its score to be 16-20 down. A three on the next head to Beckenham put it in a very favourable position of 23-16 up with only two heads left to play. On the next head United took two shots and on the last it completely outplayed the Beckenham four to get five shots and tie. On the extra head Beckenham took two shots to wdn a very exciting game. Brilliant Recovery The South Brighton four also staged a brilliant recovery over the last three heads to beat Shirley. On the eighteenth head Shirley was leading 16-12, but South Brighton came back to bring the score level on the last

l6-all. On the extra head the shot went to South Brighton and gave it the win, 17-16. Most of the games in the second round were one-sided. Mrs Nankivell (Woolston), after a bye in the first round, had two comfortable wins in the second and third rounds. She will now contest a semi-final.

Mrs Snedden (Linwood), wife of S. J. Snedden the Empire games representative, had a comfortable win in her first game. In her next she was beaten by Mrs Logie (Redcliffsi, 20-15. The Linwood four fought hard to stave off defeat. After being 1-13 down on the sixth head Linwood lost by five. Leading 9-5 on the tenth head. Kaiapoi could not withstand the pressure from the St. Albans four. St. Albans led 16-10 with only four heads to play. On these the scoring was even and St. Albans won, 19-13. Third Round Game

The third-round game between Dallington and Beckenham was even up to the tenth head when Dallington led, 12-11. For the next six heads Dallington was superior and led 23-11 on the sixteenth head. A three to Beckenham on the next head narrowed the margin but a two to Dallington on the eighteenth head put the issue beyond doubt. Two shots on the twentieth ended the game with Dallington winning 26-18. Results were:—
