WOOL SALE AT WELLINGTON

Prices Steady To Easier (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 2. Compared with the recent Napier sale extra fine and fine crossbreds were about firm, medium crossbreds 2) per cent, cheaper and strong 2| per cent, to 5 per cent, lower the official report of the fourth Wellington wool sale today. The catalogue totalled 29,679 bales and consisted mainly of wool from the Manawatu, Rangitikei and Wairarapa districts. It comprised chiefly ewe wool with a big proportion of lambs’ wool. Stronger wools were more prominent than usual. Generally the ewe wool was not up to the standard expected at this sale. It was inclined to be light in condition and showed tenderness and the effect of the wet summer was apparent in the prevalence of water and yolk stain. The lambs’ wool opened up in a reasonably good condition but a proportion also was water and yolk stained.

The sale was fairly steady throughout, though the demand was inclined to drag when inferior lots were offered. Main support for the market came from the Continent, with Bradford providing consistent competition. The New Zealand Wool Commission representatives supported the market from time to time with their bids but thenactual purchases were small. Compared with the recent Napier sale extra fine and fine crossbreds were about firm, medium crossbreds 21 per cent, cheaper and strong 2} per cent, to 5 per cent, lower. Good style lambs’ wool was firm but inferior sorts were in buyers’ favour. Skirtings were up to 2J per cent, cheaper.
