RATING MONEY FOR ROADS
Farmers Lodge ! Objection (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. April 2. Land should not be rated for reading purposes. Federated Farmers submitted today to the Royal Commission on Local Authority Finance. Mr J. C. Adams, on behalf of me federation said its view was that reading costs would be met by the users. And the landowner, as well as the non-landowner, would pay a share according to their use of the roads.
"At present the farmer pays four ways toward roading costs. As a landowner paying rates; as a taxpayer contributing to the State: as a car and truck-owner and as a hirer of licensed road transport.” said Mr Adams. The federation believed that if more funds were required for roading purposes they should be found from petrol tax and heavy traffic fees, not by increased rating on the land. Mr Adams said the federation considered there should be legislation to give relief to farmlands in countries contiguous to large urban areas.
“A good example is Makara county where the enchroachment of housing schemes and the abnormal rise in land values nas imposed a heavy rating burden on lands being retained for farming production," said Mr Adams.
