EVATT PRAISES SOVIET MOVE
Decision To Halt Atom Tests
(Rec. 8 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 2. The leader of the Federal Opposition, Dr. H. V. Evatt, last night described Russia’s decision to halt nuclear tests as important. It should not be dismissed as propaganda, he said. “It could be the turning point in the struggle for disarmament both in respect of nuclear and conventional weapons. There were now improved chances of earlier and fuller exploratory talks between Western and Soviet leaders.
“It is only by an early favourable response to the general demand for summit talks, that the West can recover ground lost by foolish and repeated excuses for delay or postponement,” said Dr. Evatt.
Dr. Evatt said he agreed with the statement by the British Labour leader. Mr Gaitskell, that Western replies to Russia’s proposals for summit talks tended to be “clumsy, confused and inadequate.” The Australian Labour Party, he said, endorsed the stand taken by the British Labour Party in its foreign policy on East-West relations.
