POWER FAILURE AT LYTTELTON
Pick Driven In Cable While digging a trench in the footpath outside the fire brigade station in Sumner road, Lyttelton, yesterday afternoon, a workman employed by the electrical department of the Lyttelton Borough Council drove a pick into a 400-volt cable, causing an electrical explosion. Mr Frank Demicheli, a linesman who was standing by the trench, was caught by the flash and suffered superficial burns to the face and an arm. After being attended at the casualty ward by Dr G. Lewis, Mr Demicheli was able to go to his home. The short circuit in the main burnt out a switch at the substation nearby, and the business part of the town was without power for two hours and a-half until temporary repairs were made.
