GRAND NATIONAL WINNER

Background Of Mr , What Mr What’s win in the Grand National at Aintree on Saturday was the highlight of a remarkable career. In the 1955-56 and 1956-57 seasons Mr What raced with only moderate success over hurdles, winning one maiden and one handicap event at Leopardstown. In that petiod he fell in the only novice 'chase that he contested. Although it was significant that he started favourite then, to all intents and purposes, he had no experience of steeplechasing until the start of the present season.

Mr What is a bay gelding by Grand Inquisitor from Duchess of Pendulas, by Duke of Buckingham. Grand Inquisitor has yet to establish a reputation as a sire of 'chasers, but he is by His Reverence (a noted sire in' this respect) out of High Prestige, by Prince Galahad, and had a touch of class when racing, finishing second to Windsor Slipper in the Irish Two Thousand Guineas and Derby. He was a very strong and game horse and won 12 races. Duchess of Pedulas, the dam of Mr What, has bred two other good 'chasers, Colonial Jack and Battling Pedulas.
