Car Failed To Take Bend
A United States sailor was killed and five other persons injured on Saturday when a rental car failed to take a bend on the Allandale-Governor’s Bay road and rolled down a bank. He was: Gerald Richard Davies, aged 19. a construction mechanic, of Buffalo, New York. Mechanic ' Davies was a passenger in the car, driven by David Gates, of 33 Montreal street. Other passengers were Richard Rosenberry, U.S.N., Betty Taylor, of 156 Wainoni road. Nancy Vincent, of 264 Hereford street, and Josephine Hopkins, of Cashel street. When the car left the road it rolled over about three times, throwing most of the occupants out on to the bank. Mechanic Davies was pinned under the car. Two ambulances, sent from Lyttelton, took the Injured persons to the Christchurch Public Hospital. Miss Hopkins was reported last evening to have recovered consciousness and to be improving. The condition of Misses Taylor and Vincent and Mr Gates was said to be satisfactory. Mr Rosenberry was treated in the outpatients’ department.
