Opawa Club Celebrates Jubilee
The Opawa Bowling Club celebrated its . fiftieth anniversary during the week-end, the celebrations being opened on Saturday morning by the president of the club (Mr R. C. M. Madsen) when he welcomed players who were taking part in an all-day tournament. This was won by T. B. Lane (Fendalton). During the day two foundation members, Canon H. Williams and Mr C. Saunders, were among the many who visited the green. In the evening a social gathering was held during which Mrs C. Poulton unveiled and presented to the club a champions honours board in memory of her husband. Receiving the honours board on behalf of the club, Mr Madsen remarked on the work that had been done by Mr Poulton after he joined the club in 1923. It was greatly through his efforts that the number two green was laid down. The guests of the evening were the members of the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s executive committee, and the president of the New Zealand council (Mr S. L. Hall), who proposed the toast of the club. Yesterday an all-day mixed tournament was held, the winners being T. Karton and Mrs Karton, D. Rewcastle and Mrs Rewcastle (Shirley). In the evening Mr J. R. Smith showed coloured slides of his extensive tour of America. The celebrations will end tonight with a smoke concert.
