BALLET DUEL
Challenge Made And Accepted (Rec. 11 p.m.) PARIS, March 23. The Marquis de Cuevas, 72-year-old internationally known ballet director, last night accepted a challenge to a duel from Serge Lifar, 52-year-old choreographer of the Paris Opera. The dispute, over who has the right to produce a ballet, became dramatically public on Friday night at the Theatre Des Champs Elysees during a performance of the ballet when Mr Lifar flung his pocket handkerchief at the feet of the Marquis. The handkerchief represented the gauntlet Mr Lifar did not have. The Marquis picked it up and threw it back in the challenger’s face. Although the ballet was a great success its creator and producer could not end their quarrel. The Marquis, overcome by the applause of the audience, embraced everyone within range except Mr Lifar. Mr Lifar’s seconds called on the Marquis yesterday. The Marquis has chosen his second. The affair of honour must either end in reconciliation or be settled at dawn with pistols and swords.
