Fisherman Drowned Off Coast
(New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, March 23. A Timaru man was drowned last night when the boat he was fishing from at the mouth of the Opilii river was swept out ‘.o sea. He was Erie James Stewart, aged 35, married with four children In company with a friend. Norman George Alexander Massie, of Riversdale, Southland, Mr Stewart was fishing near the mouth about 10.45 p.m. when the boat was swept by the current and capsized. Mr Massie managed to swim ashore.
A search was started for Mr Stewart immediately after midnight and by 2 a.m. some Ashing gear was found. At 7.30 this morning the boat was located, upside down, between the Orari and Rangitata river mouths. Mr Stewart’s body was found about 11.25 a.m. about 150 yards north of the Opihi mouth by a Timaru resident who was fishing nearby.
