STATE SPENDING ON EDUCATION
Minister Asks For Another £lm Education boards may get authority from the Minister of Finance (Mr Nordmeyer) to spend up to 50 per cent, of their 1957-58 allocation from April 1 this year. This would prevent any hold-up in building programmes. This possibility was mentioned by the Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund) when speaking to the Canterbury Education Board yesterday. # V The boards, which last year spent about £8 million, had asked for £lO million this year, said the Minister. This had now been cut back to £9 million and he was hoping to obtain that amount. “Even if we don’t get that £l million, there is no doubt • that we will get at least 50 per cent, of last year’s allocation, and think Mr Nordmeyer will approve the immediate allocation of that amount—our people consider health and education to be two most important departments,” Mr Skoglund said.
