NODDING THISTLE CONTROL

Serious Spread In

Ashburton Area

The serious spread of nodding thistle in many parts of the Ashburton county over the last two years and measures for its control Were discussed at length by the Mid-Canterbury provincial executive of Federated Farmers at its meeting in Ashburton yesterday afternoon. The executive was considering two remits from the Lauriston branch of Federated Farmers asking that the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research be asked to investigate methods of biological control of the weed, and that the executive consider pressing for some form of regional control under the Noxious Weeds Act. The executive decided to write to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research asking it to investigate biological control of nodding thistle in the Ashburton county, and that the question of regional control of the thistle be discussed at all annual meetings of branches of Mid-Canter-bury Federated Farmers, to be held shortly. If one or more branches recommend regional control for their areas, the executive will endeavour to arrange a combined meeting with the Ashburton County Council to discuss its possible introduction.
