APPEAL TO T.U.C. BY MR WALSH

Little Prominence In British Press

(Special Corresponaent N Z.P A.) LONDON, March 20.

The appeal by Mr F. P. Walsh, pr-” dent of the New Zealand Federation of Labour, to Sir Vinc_.it Tewson, secretary of the British Trades Union Congress, to support New Zealand's case against the dumping of foreign butter has received rather meagre treatment by the British press. t Most prominence was given by the “Daily Express,” which allotted about eight inches to the report under the heading “New Zealand Appeals to T.U.C.” Private views, especially in the dairy produce trade, are cautious and mixed. One v’.rtT doubts Mr Walsh’s wisdor- in making the apf almost at the moment when the Board of *.ade has begun its consideration of the nros and cons. •Another is that if he has not placed the T.U 1 the Labour Party in a dilemma, he has certainly presented them with a cleft stick—if it does not support his appeal it can be accused of not helping the solidarity of internal' 1 Labour, but if it does support it, it is in effect casting a v-»te for dearer butter, which is in direct to its policy of cheap food.
