Military Training
Sir, —Compulsory military training is totalitarianism. It brings New Zealand into line with totalitarian dictatorships. A man yields to it from fear of prosecution and submits to military discipline from fear of harsh punishment He is not driven by hunger to fight as primitive man sometimes did, but compelled by fear and threats. Fear is also created by lies. Governments try to intimidate a selected opponent, telling him that they have bigger bomba, faster planes, more money, stronger determination. They tell their own people that the selected enemy is strongly armed, that he is wicked, aggressive, criminal, that more money is needed for armaments to protect the country. The Opponent is doing exactly the same. At heart the vast majority of all peoples are conscientious objectors to war but have not the courage to proclaim IL Russians, Americans, British, Germans. Chinese. Jqws. Arabs are basically alike.—Yours, etc..
