GUARANTEED PRICES

£l9m Cuts In Britain

LONDON. March 20. The Government today announced a £19,000,000 cut in the amount set aside for giving British farmers guaranteed prices for their products in the financial year beginning next month.

An official White Paper said that the cuts included Id a gallon in the guaranteed price of milk. “Production continues to increase and is now substantially above current requirements, with undesirable consequences at home and abroad, particularly in the Commonwealth,” it added. This milk over-production is a contributing factor to the present low level of dairy produce prices in Britain. The level of the Government’s financial assistance was ‘‘unrealistic,’’ he said. The total value of the guarantees for next year, including relevant grants, works out at £1,257 million.
