Hawke’s Bay To Have Meeting
Canterbury will agree to allow Hawke’s Bay to hold the New Zealand women’s and junior championships in 1959 but will reserve the right to ask the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay Centre for the 1961 women’s and junior championships. This was decided at the meeting of the executive of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association on Thursday evening.
A letter was received from the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay Centre asking whether Canterbury would agree to an exchange of the dates for the championships—Canterbury had been allocated 1959 and 1960 by the New Zealand Association.
“Next year the Hawke’s Bay province will celebrate its Centenary and our centre wishes to hold the New Zealand women’s and junior championships in the province.” said the letter. Hawke’s Bay proposed exchanging its 1961 allocation for Canterbury’s 1959 one. or • taking 1959 and 1961 and leaving Canterbury with 1960. The chairman (Mr G. E. Voller) said that the only anomaly was that it would probably disrupt the cross-country roster Aor Canterbury. “I think it was discussed at the cross-country executive meeting. It was said that this executive is drawing up coiiqter proposals and is holding fireA said Mr J. C. Daly. Flight Lieutenant E. Lunn: Do you think they feel strongly about it? \
“They are aghast at the possibility of having the''cross-coun-try 18 years from the last one which was held in Christchurch,” said Mr Daly. “I have a feeling that we could perhaos give them 1959 and hold the championshios in 1960 and 1961. We are still going to.gain financially by not having to send teams away then.” said Mr Daly. He moved that Canterbury agree to give Hawke’s Bay 1959 in exchange for 1961. Reserved Right
Mr R. A. Linton moved an amendment that Canterbury agree Ao Hawke’s Bay holding the championships in 1959 but reserve the right to ask Tor 1961 if it so decided by a delegate’s meeting. The amendment was carried. A letter was received from the Waimate Athletic Club asking that the Canterbury Centre withhold any action towards the abolition of the sub-centre until next season, when the Waimate club would undertake to sponsor a meeting of the members of all South Canterbury clubs and have the matter fully discussed. “It would also be to the advantage of the centre as well as the sub-centre to have at that meeting, the president of the centre. He would then be in a position to report back on the problems with which the subcentre is faced,” said the letter
Mr P R. May moved that the Canterbury Centre write to the Waimate club saying that it is interested in the proposal and suggesting that the club hold the meeting before the centre annual meeting. The motion was carried.
