Athletics NOMINATIONS FOR CARDIFF
Miss Sloper Tops List
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. March 21. The New Zealand title and recordholder in the women’s shot put and discus events, Miss Valerie Sloper, has been nominated as first choice for the athletes to make the trip to the 1958 Empire Games at Cardiff in July.
Onlv one other Canterbury athlete —Miss Marise Chamberlain was nominated. She .is sixteenth in order of priority. Miss Sloper, who is also the New Zealander titleholder for the pentathlon event, was nominated for her twostrongest events, the shot and the discus. Miss Chamberlain was nominated for the 220 yards—she holds the New Zealand title—the 100 yards, and four by 100 yards relay. Unfortunately, her best distance, the 440 yards, for which she recently lowered the world record, is not included in the Games programme, and this lowered her chances of selection. However, in recent months she has "been training over the shorter distances and has recorded some good times. Other Canterbury athletes who must have been in the running but did not receive nomination were the high jumper, P Wells, and W. Richards.
