STATELY HOME OWNERS MAY FORM UNION

(Rec 9 p.m.) LONDON, Mar. 21. The owners of Britain’s stately homes, which have been opened to the public, were today reported to be planning a * union to protect their interests.

The “News Chronicle” quoted Major Alexander Beattie, owner of Thoresby Hall, Nottinghamshire, as saying: “There may soon be a union of owners.

“Such an organisation is on the way. An approach has been made to me. But that is all I can say at the moment”

The newspaper reports Major Beattie as saying that the principal idea would be to reduce running costs.

“If we had our notepaper done by one particular printer, for instance, we would get it • a lot cheaper.” Major Beattie thought the “top ten” stately homes, in order of popularity among visitors, should get together. Thoresby Hall, a gaunt, Victorian Gothic mansion, is six*h on this list and will probably be visited by 80,000 persons this season.
