SALE OF SHEEP RECALLED
Swyncombe Run, Kaikoura
The destruction of the Swyncombe homestead, Kaikoura, by fire in January this year, recalls that in 1932 when a clearing sale was held on the property, about 400 sheep were sold for a total price of £2 10s—about 2Jd a head—a record low price for New Zealand.
Swyncombe homestead, a twostorey, 10-roomed building was built in the early 1860’s and was one of the show pieces of early Kaikoura. It was built shortly after the Swyncombe run was taken over by the Ruck Keene brothers—Captain George Ruck Keene, R.N., Mr Charles Ruck Keene and the Rev. Ruck Keene.
The homestead was frequently honoured by vice-regal patronage during the 1860’s and 1870’s and its owners were the main force behind the establishment of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Kaikoura.
The Ruck Keene brothers sold Swyncombe to Mr W. Wood in 1882. Mr Wood established a flourmilling business in Christchurch and his brother, Mr Charles Wood, managed the run and later took up Lynton Downs run. He died in Christchurch last year.
