Travellers’ Cameras

Sir,—A booklet available by the thousand in travel agencies makes clear the position on camera duties in Britain: “Although almost all articles are liable to import duty and in many cases purchase tax, duty and tax will not normally be charged on personal effects which have been in the ownership and use of passengers for a considerable period or which will be reexported at the conclusion of a visit of not more than six months' duration. Where the visit exceeds six months but is for less than 12 months, a refundable deposit to cover the duty and tax may be required for new or little used articles such as fur coats, watches, cameras, etc.” I know at least three young New Zealanders who purchased expensive cameras in duty-free ports on their trip to Britain, and the Customs are well after these.— Yours, etc., FACTS RIGHT. March 20, 1958.
