Apartheid

Sir, —In his splendid letter, Mr R. M. Rhoodie vainly appeals to “The Press’’ for understanding of his Government’s policy of apartheid. I do not pretend to know all that is right or wrong in South Africa, but of one thing clear-headed people must be certain:. without apartheid, the white

race cannot survive anywhere in Africa. Integration must mean loss of white leadership, mongrelisation, and a return to the darkest barbarism for the blacks. I cannot see anything fanatical in a desire to prevent this. Surely, the fanatics are those who, contrary to normal, healthy instinct, in spite of ordinary common sense, and in the face of nature itself, seek to force face-mixing upon two peoples so utterly unalike. Some people, including “The Press,” favour coloured immigration to New Zealand. Why?—Yoqrs, etc., J. HARTLEY. March 19, 1958.

The Tax Rebate Sir, —“B. Constant” (1.) is quite right to say that the age beneficiairy is an underdog. So is the worker on the basic wage and with a family. He receives no rebate. My contention was that it was easier for people on high incomes to pay tax than those who received the rebate; 2. How can a tax be revoked before it is assessed? 3. The Labour offer was in line with principle. The National offer was a bid to outdo that offer. 4. If “B. Constant” is opposed to socialism (and he must be on his own admission) he is opposed to a fair distribution of goods. 5. Opportunity is not equal for everyone.—Yours, etc., A.F.P. March 19, 1958.

Town Hall Site Sir, —Why all this shilly-shally-ing about the site for the town hall? The public have plainly expressed their wish for the “Limes” site and they are the people ‘Who have to provide the. money for it. If an unpopular site is chosen, the public will not subscribe. I, for one, will cancel a 17-year-old legacy for it. No doubt many others will do the same.—Yours, etc., CITIZEN. March 20, 1958.
