REGATTA AT PICTON

Association To Pay Expenses

The cost of sending the' rowing crew to represent Canterbury at Picton at the Easter regatta will be met by the Canterbury Rowing Association, it was decided at the meeting of the association this week.

The money will be taken from the association’s funds, and a subscription list which will be opened. "We should pay the full amount and then get what we can back from subscriptions, said Mr W. H. Candy. In the old days, when a man could not find the money to go. someone else took his place and I do not agree with that—we did not use the best team available.”

Suggestions were made that funds be obtained from the clubs and from a public appeal. The clubs will require a lot of money to shift “down the river,” said Mr F. J. Cullen. “They are fairly heavily committed for the next five to six years with buildings projects. Next time we go on the market for money we should go in a big way.” “Christchurch, on the whole, gets off fairly lightly in its support of sport,” said the chairman (Mr W. G. Richards). "We do not get much support.” “Raffles are detestable things.” said the secretary (Mr E. R. MeCaiman). “The Canterbury Club raised about £2500 and much of it was from contract work.” Dunedin also had a svstem which was operated 12 months of the year by «the combined rowing clubs, he said. “Wanganui does the same thing. We must look beyond raffles.”
