Rowing EMPIRE GAMES NOMINATIONS Selectors’ Choices
Members of the Hamilton Rowing Club, Mercer Rowing Club and the Union Boating Club, Wanganui, have had their names submitted to the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association for inclusion in the New Zealand British Empire Games team, by the national rowing selectors, Messrs C. A. Healey and R. B. Smith, according to a report received at the committee meeting of the Canterbury Rowing Association.
The teams, in order of preference for inclusion, are: Pair oared crew without coxswain, R. H. Douglas, stroke, and R. A. Dpuglas, bow. of the Mercer Rowing Club. Single sculls, J. R. Hill, of the Hamilton Rowing Club. Double sculls, J. R. Hill, stroke, and N. Suckling, bow, of the Hamilton Rowing Club. Fouroared with coxswain, D. L. Gemmell, stroke, P. Aitchison. 3, F. Crotty, 2, R. Moran, bow, and E. E. Crotty emergency, of the Union Boating Club, Wanganui. Championship Holders The crews submitted are the present New Zealand rowing championship holders of their respective classes. The Selectors suggested that the oarsmen could also compete in the eight-oar event if the Empire Games rowing programme is suitably arranged for such an entry from New Zealand. A letter received from the New Zealand Association last evening said that local associations were invited to submit nominations for the position of manager of the New Zealand rowing team.Any nomination must be supported by the association’s guarantee to find the £6OO required to send the manager, said the letter. This was caused by the council being already heavily committed financially. The council had agreed to pay the first £6OO for each oarsman and sculler selected and the balance would have to be raised by the local rowing associations concerned, said the letter.
