Palace Most Impressive "The Press’ Special Service DUNEDIN. March 20. Palace and Lady Verona were responsible for smart trials at Wingatui this moraine when the gallops were held about 69 feet ort on the course proper. Conditions were ideal. Promise, Blue Count, All Fair and Count Aven—all Oamaru . candidates—also worked attractively. Lady Verona, ridden by her race day jockey, J. M. Surgenor. dashed over the first two furlongs in 25sec, and ran on strongly to complete five furlongs in Imin 5 2-ssec. Royal Chant (R. J. Bain), an early favourite for the Weston Maiden Handicap, galloped easily alongside his stablemate. Chief Pal (B. Blair), over the same ground in Imin 8 3-ssec after taking 27sec for the first two furlongs.

Palace (D. Dawson) recorded the best half-mile of the morning. He dashed over the opening furlong in 12sec, and completed the distance in 51 2-ssec. The Super gelding was a surprise favourite in the Flying Handicap at Wingatui early in the month, but he was never a danger, and was one of the last to finish.

Promiss (G. A. Campbell) completed his preparation for the Oamaru Cup with a half-mile trial with Captain Hunt (L. W. Hare). Both horses completed their task well to cover' the distance ih 53sec, the last three furlongs in 40sec.

Mitre Peak’s Sprint Mitre Peak (H. T. Anderton) had a neck to spare from his stablemate. The Wanderer (R. J. Skelton), over the same ground in 52 2-ssec. These two horses had two lengths start when they broke away, and they maintained this advantage to the post from Subside (B. J, Anderton) and Ren way (E. O’Brien), which were clear of Ben Led! (B. P. Kennedy). A recent addition to H. A. Anderton’s stable. Subside may have her first race since she came to Wingatui in the open sprint at the Beaumont Racing Club’s meeting at the end of the month. O’Brien, snowed up in his trial over six furlongs in Imm 21sec. covering the first three furlongs in 39sec. O’Brien will have the mount on the Fair’s Fair gelding in the Redcastle Hack Handicap. Bonniboy (G. A. Campbell), King Cassock (G. E. Lowry) and Sivite (L. W. Hare) ran an even six furlongs in Imin 20 2-ssec, the first three furlongs in 40 3-ssec. Blue Count (G. E. Lowry) bad a neck to spare from Arabian Chief (O’Brien) with six lengths to Vocalise (G. A. Campbell), and two lengths to Cassius (J. D. Pankhurst) in Imin 23eec, the last three furlongs in 42sec. Vocalize tailed off early and Cassius dropped out in the run home. Smart Half Mile Count Aven (O'Brien) and Smart (H. T. Anderton) were together over seven furlongs in Imin 36 4-ssec. There was not much pace on early, but Sir Gerald (B. J. Anderton) forced the issue ivhen he joined in at the five furlongs, and they completed their trial with a smart half mile in 53sec. Sunerva (G. G. E. Lowry will now ride Vocalize in the Gardner Steeples. Plunder will also be missing from the Oamaru Stewards’ Handicap. The Callander gelding has given his trainer, H. J. Powell, some concern lately, and he will be put aside for a time. R. J. Skelton will now ride Treasure Pond in the Oamaru Cup, and J. W. McDonald will ride Blue Count in the Oamaru high-welght event.
