River Control

After seeing on the spot something of the ravages of the Clutha, the Waimakariri, and the Waikato when in flood, the Minister of Works (Mr Watt) is impressed by the magnitude and national importance of the task of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council. “It is a herculean labour and must not be delayed or hindered.” he told a meeting of the council. Mr Watt said the country could not afford to hold up any of the work required to control the rivers and conserve the soil. It was not economic to slow it down, and its great value was clearly demonstrable to all in terms of safeguiding lives, land, homes, and production.— (PA.)
