“SPRING-TIME OF HISTORY”
Pope’s View Of Progress (Rec. 9 p.m.) VATICAN CITY, March 20. A cheering crowd yesterday heard Pope Pius XII declare that the world was in the “springtime’’ of history. “God willing, it will be one of the most beautiful springs mankind has ever lived through,” he said.
The Pope, who was addressing young members of the Italian Catholic Action massed in St. Peter’s Square said that material life, even amidst so much sadness and poverty, was progressing steadily with more widespread well-being. The Pope went on: “The Church has not come to the end of her martyrdom and in these days, unarmed but fearless as always, she faces the furious assault of those who try to strike at her with malicious insinuations, and with damaging suspicion, often throwing mud at her immaculate vestments.’’ This was an evident reference to the anti-Church campaign being waged by Italian Left-wing parties and to the conviction two weeks ago of the Bishop of Prato on a criminal charge of defamation.
The bishop had declared that a young couple married at a civil ceremony and not in Church were “public sinners living in concubinage.”
