UNREST IN FRANCE “Right-Wing Revolt”

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) PARIS, March 20. The French Prime Minister. Mr Felix Gaillard, told a meeting of Ministers last night that he would resign if the Conservatives decided tomorrow to withdraw their Ministers over the French and Tunisian dispute, according to sources close to the French Government.

The 'Conservatives hold 101 of the French National Assembly’s 594 seats.

Earlier yesterday some observers had said the Coalition Government formed last November might be overthrown by the end of the week in a Right-wing revolt. The crisis within the French Government was brought to a head by reports that Mr Gaillard and his Foreign Minister, Mr Christian Pineau, had agreed in principle to the withdrawal of French troops from Tunisian airfields.

Such a withdrawal, it was reported, would be part of a conciliation “deal” proposed by the British and American “good offices” mission which has been trying to bring the French and Tunisians into direct contact to settle their differences.

The Conservatives are strongly opposed to a withdrawal because they believe it would leave the Tunisian airfields free for use by Algerian rebels.
