Trade With China
Sir.—l was surprised to read of Mr Holyoake’s criticism of Mr Nash’s effort to foster trade with China. Mr Holyoake, more than anyone, knows the importance of more markets for New Zealand trade, now that our economy is at such a low ebb. We must not forget, too, that China was our war-time ally, while Japan was our enemy. Therefore, Mr Nash acts with reason when he gives priority to China. As for China s political philosophy being the opposite of our own, I remind Mr Holyoake that he cast aside a similar objection when he went to Russia to seek trade to help New Zealand finance.—Yours, etc., CONSISTENT. March 19, 1958.
