SOVIET SPACE LEAD

Prediction By Khrushchev

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MOSCOW, March 18. The Communist Party chief (Mr Khrushchev) was quoted today as saying the United States would be lagging behind the Soviet Union in space “from this time on.’*

The American Associated Press said that the Russian leader told this to three American observers at the Soviet elections on Sunday. Mr Khrushchev said that in industry the Soviet Union would surpass America. He did not know exactly when, but said: “We are about to cross the line.’’ The three observers gave a press conference today at the end of their two-week visit.

Mr Khrushchev said the United States was lagging in science because Russia had a greater choice of talented persons. He did not understand why Americans refused to take seriously Soviet slogans about surpassing the United States in industry.

“We are not threatening the United States with this competition. We consider it the task of all the people of the earth to achieve the same high level of living as the United States and we believe there are enough resources in the world for this to take place,’’ he said.
