Lamb Advances

Lamb and mutton prices showed a slight increase on the Smithfield market last week, according to advice received from the Imported Meat Trade Association in its latest report. AH grades of mutton were unchanged, with the exception of the crossbred wethers and maiden ewes, 491 b to 561 b, which showed an increase of 4d on the previous week’s quotations. First quality Canterbury lamb, 281 b and under, showed an advance of |d in its average quotation. Intermediate weights were unchanged, but there was a id decrease in the average quotation in the 43 to 501 b class. Seconds followed the same prices. All quoted classes of frozen and chilled beef also showed increases, ranging from id to Id. These prices are compared with those of the week ending March 7, but no comparisons are possible with prices before that date.

The week ended March 7 was the first in which the Imported Meat Trade Association adopted its new method of compiling the weekly record of sales from the market, and the quotations now include extra charges not brought into the previous schedules.
