SWIMMING C. McFadden Breaks Own 440yd Record By 4sec

The finest distance freestyle swimmer in New Zealand, Colin McFadden, aged 17, of Canterbury, recorded an outstanding time for the 440 yards freestyle of 4min 48.7 sec at the Centennial Pool yesterday. McFadden, who swam in an unofficial time trial as part of his training, bettered his own New Zealand record for the distance by four seconds. As holder of both the national 1650 yards and 440 yards men's freestyle titles, each of them in. record time, McFadden’s time yesterday adds further to his chances of selection for Cardiff.

McFadden was swimming in his first trial since a fortnight’s rest

after the national senior swimming championships. For the whole distance he swam in a perfectly relaxed style but with a strong and confident arm action. His time, although unofficial, is the fastest 440 yards ever swum by a New Zealander. \ The Boys’ High School boy is now well into Empire Games class, and has fully justified his third grading in the swimming nominations. At the last Empire Games, F. R. Lucas, then New Zealand’s best distance swimmer, recorded 4min 58.3 sec—a time which McFadden has consistently beaten with ease.
