N.Z. TRADE WITH CHINA

Mr Holyoake Replies To Mr Skinner

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 19.

The assertion by the ActingPrime Minister (Mr Skinner) that the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) had done a “very effective job of countering Communist blandishments and propaganda” contrasted strangely with Mr Nash’s statement that he favoured recognition of Communist China, said the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Holyoake) today. “It is apparent that Mr Nash’s contacts abroad have served only to confirm his ideas about the Peking regime, since he is now concerned both with fostering trade with Communist China and with strengthening political ties.

“I note Mr Skinner’s assurance that the Labour Government would be prepared to discuss any reasonable proposal for the expansion of trade with Japan also. This indicates a change in Government policy. It will be interesting to see what is accomplished in this direction.”
