Dying Child’s Plea For Watermelon

The plea of a dying seven-year-old girl for some watermelon—almost non-existent in New England in winter—touched the hearts of people all over the United States. From. various donors watermelons were sent in hurried shipments to Audrey Hocking after her plea had been disclosed at the Rhode Island Hospital late on Monday.
But when the first watermelon arrived, the life of the child who was a victim of cancer was ebbing so swiftly that she was unable to eat it By Tuesday she was dead.
But the kindness of the senders will brighten the lives of other children. An out-of-season watermelon party for child patients at the hospital has been planned.
