Junior Historical Branch
More than 70 sixth form secondary school pupils, including some from Ashburton and Rangiora, attended the first meeting for the year of the junior branch of the Canterbury Historical Association which was held recently. Professor N. C, Phillips, of the history department, University of Canterbury, said in an address of welcome that the purpose of the branch was to interest and even amuse rather than instruct and that if the members learned anything it would be quite incidental. A historical quiz prepared by Mrs A. Pocock, of St. Andrew’s College, a “twenty questions” propgramme conducted by Mr B. J. Ferrand, of Christchurch West High School and a film on Spanish missions in California, shown by Mr A. B. Ryan, of Christchurch Teachers’ College, were included in the programme.
