TROTTING Moon Boy—Elsinore For Cheviot Double

Moon Boy and Elsinore are selected to win the on-course double at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s annual meeting at Rangiora today. Moon Boy is one of the backmarkers on 72 yards in the Southbrook Handicap, the first leg of the double, while Elsinore will start from the front in the second leg, the North Canterbury Bacing Club Handicap.

Moon Boy, a winner on the course in December, raced rather sluggishly at the Addington trials on Thursday, but he may be improved as a result of the run. If he races up to his best form, he should go close to winning, as he can be relied on to run out the two miles more strongly than most of his rivals.

After being well back early, Lucie Manette finished strongly for fifth over one mile and threequarters at Washdyke last week. She is off the front ’today, and she could easily be in or near the lead all the way. She has raced most solidly lately and should he one of the hardest {or Moon Boy to beat. Ida Ray, which is also engaged in the Domett Handicap, may add interest to the finish. She was fifth over 13 furlongs at Orari last month at her most recent start, and that effort entitles her to respect. None of the .others in the race is noted for solidity Dalniatian has raced well enough at times to be a serious threat in this race, but more often she has broken under pressure. If she can be restrained until inside the last furlong before putting in a challenge she could gain a long-overdue win. Procrastinator, Suntrap and Coming Down all have the ability to race prominently ir this field, but they are far from reliable, and will have to be taken on trust. Winner At Washdyke

Elsinore, a stylish winner at Washdyke, should be well suited by the sprint distance in the North Canterbury Racing Club Handicap. She is also engaged in the, Cheviot Cup, but looks a much better prospect in this race. She has raced most generously lately and it will be surprising if she fails to take part in the finish. Young Sister has won twice in her last four starts and those efforts suggest that she will be hard to beat. Her most recent win was over two miles at Hutt Park. Radar was a fast-finishing second to Toronto Boy in a similar race at Washdyke last Saturday. She could easily improve on that effort today. Compere and Fox Able should do best of the others on the front, whil6 General Advance, Tonga and Half Back appeal most of the handicapped horses. Large fields are carded for the other six races, three of which are for maiden pacers. Split Pin and Our Bridget, both of which are trained in the Ashburton district, are selected in the First and Second Trial Handicaps respectively, while Stay Bright may make a winning run in the twomile Spotswood Handicap. Kauranui and Beau Clair, place-getters at Washdyke, may dispute the finish to the Domett Handicap, in which Reflective, Ida Ray, Thumberlina and Van Cheetah may show to advantage. The off-course double will be run on the Rangiora Handicap and 1 the Cheviot Cup, Siberia and Dozer forming a likely combination. Rain on Thursday and yesterday had no adverse effect on the track at Rangiora and unless there is very heavy rain it should be in splendid order.
